Mr. James Gempler is an exceptional lawyer. I was faced with some serious charges. 4th degree assualt on a police officer and Obstructing the legal process. I was extremely scared and worried . I was being charged for a gross misdemeanor for a firearm charge. I went off these guys based on their reviews, i should’ve looked at their specialties. They Are probably excellent lawyers, but not for what My case was for. In the beginning, they sold themselves as they would fight and do anything they could for me, so i felt fairly confident that this charge would get dropped. After i paid them and left the office, i didn't get any communication about the case or how it was going. I would be the one who would have to reach out and ask for details. They sold me on how good they were and that they are so confident my charge will get dropped and what not. As the case went on, it was evident to me that, that was not going to happen and There was a strong chance I would lose my case. This case was going nowhere and Instead of wasting more of my time appearing in court, i just took the plea deal they offered. I was being charged with a gross misdemeanor, i took the plea deal and was charged with a gross misdemeanor. What a deal! (Sarcastic). I should've just went with a public defender if i knew these guys weren’t that good in the area i was being charged in. Mostly my fault for not looking more into these guys, but still, i feel they didn’t “fight” as hard as they claim they do.

Update: May 2019 a close friend was arrested and asked me to contact a lawyer on their behalf. Since I was already acquainted with North Star Criminal Defense I contacted Mr.
Gempler. Despite it being around 8pm on a weeknight he responded almost immediately. Because the arrest took place in Iowa where he is not certified he could not represent my friend, but he still took the time out of his evening to check if he had any colleagues in the area of the arrest that he could recommend and asked his partner to do so as well. Furthermore he took the time to thoroughly explain what he was able to do, and recommend what courses of action were available even ones that didn’t involve himself.
Professionalism and service of such quality are hard to come by. The fact that he remained so helpful despite knowing he would not be able to represent my friend and was unlikely to benefit financially from the conversation he had with me is a testament to his character and is one of the many reasons I would not hesitate to recommend North Star Criminal defense to anyone in need of legal services.

I was referred to Attorney James Gempeler at Northstar Criminal Defense by a close friend of mine. I was looking to have my DWI record expunged due to charges from 13 or 14 years ago. I had run into issues with finding employment, apartments, etc. as a result of my criminal record, and mistakes I had made when I was much younger. I didn't have much hope that I could successfully have my record expunged because I had previously talked to an attorney who told me that it was not possible. So I called James without high expectations, and met with him within a couple of days.

James was very honest and transparent with me about the potential hurdles, but assured me he was up for the challenge. He was very well educated about expungement law, and was citing sources that might be applicable to our case. He guided me step-by-step through the entire process letting me know what to expect and how to mentally prepare. He was fantastic during our court appearance. He had clear knowledge of all of the nuances of my case and was able to articulate them accurately to the judge and the opposing attorney.

This was a very emotional process for me, as I have a lot of shame surrounding the pour choices I made when I was younger - so much so that I have dedicated my professional career to helping individuals and families affected by addiction.
