On Jan. 1, 2018, a car door flung open in front of me while I was riding my bicycle on a Portland city street. There’s a verb for this. It’s called “dooring.” I hit the pavement on my left side, breaking my left collarbone and a rib. I cracked two other ribs. For what seemed like the longest time I couldn’t breathe. It was the most pain I’ve ever experienced.

An ambulance whisked me to a nearby medical center. I was kept overnight and within a few days my collarbone was surgically repaired.
