In summary, be proactive, listen to the advice, and do more community service hours than recommended. Show your sorry for your actions and he can work some magic.
When you hire a lawyer for a traffic ticket situation, you don't expect much. They aren't going to put in a lot of hours or effort, and that's fine. You are just hoping that they use their relationships at the court to get you a decent deal that lowers your costs and keeps things off of your record. I wanted to hire someone, pay their fee and then some time later have them tell me what happened, what I need to do, how much to pay the court, and be done with it. So I wasn't surprised when I didn't hear from Mr. Shrum's office for weeks after hiring them.
And then I went and looked up my case online and found that I had a bench warrant issued for failure to appear. This is literally the only part of the job that was important here - actually keeping up with the court date and handling things before then and NOT having a warrant issued. In my experience at jobs that I've had, if you screw things up THAT badly, you go out of your way to make the situation right. You put in extra effort and show some remorse and empathy for the situation.
Unfortunately, Mr. Frum's office did not feel that would be an appropriate response. Mr. Shrum and his assistant continued to be unresponsive, only replying with "we'll take care of it" and not providing me any additional information. So I had to start regularly checking online court records for updates on my case.
Mr. Shrum would accidently include me on internal emails, referring to me as "this guy," showing the same general disregard that he had for my case/situation. Promises to contact on certain dates were broken. Excuses given that my voicemail box was full even though a) I have no problems getting voice mails from other people and b) I had specifically asked for email communication (because I wanted everything in writing at this point).
Again - I get it. For $250 you don't expect a lot of hand holding and constant updates. Traffic tickets are a volume business proposition for a law office that don't require much effort. Totally reasonable. But when you fail to appear and result in a warrant being issued, I expect you to show some level of remorse, or give some kind of valid excuse. I also expect you to go at least a little out of your way to make sure you make it right.
End result is that yeah, the ticket is "handled," though I have zero reason to believe that this was the best that could be done in the situation. I have to assume that a better organized lawyer would possibly have gotten a better result, or that a better result might have been possible had my case never gotten to be in a bad standing from failure to appear. Mr. Shrum made zero effort to make things right beyond going through the remaining motions. I mean, getting your food late at a restaurant would likely at least get you a discount on your ticket.
I paid full price for a low-effort service and didn't even get the low effort that I was paying for.
It is my personal opinion that other people should not use Mr. Shrum's services.
Matt. That's who. He's much cheaper than three years of increased insurance rates and he gets the job done without you having to jump through any municipal hoops.
So, if your right foot gets you in trouble. Remember there is a great alternative to court hearings and fines: Matthew Shrum, PLLC. Oh and it doesn't hurt that he's an Austin music fan.
